Heating Upgrade

INTRODUCTION

A comprehensive window and door replacement project at Brookfield Primary School in Camden, undertaken by TF Energy for Camden Council.

This £851,000 project involved replacing 145 windows and 2 doors on the south east elevation with Accoya Timber Crafted double glazed units, complying with conservation area regulations. The installation was carefully phased across four half-term breaks to minimise disruption to school operations, with completion scheduled for August 2025.

Project Scope & Challenges

Conservation

Compliance

Located in a Camden conservation area, all window replacements required approval from Camden Heritage Planning

Department, particularly for the louvre top sections designed for NVHR mechanical ventilation.

Restricted

Timeframes

Installation limited to half-term breaks of 7-14 days, requiring precise planning to complete scaffolding, removal, installation, and sealing within these

windows.

Material Upgrade

Original specification for Bereco timber windows was upgraded to harder Accoya wood, significantly

increasing the project cost

but improving durability.

The project required installing 145 commercial-grade wooden crafted double glazed window units inRAL Colour 9016 (Traffic White), along with 3 ha rdwood contemporary flush doors of various sizes.

All units included specified ironmongery, child lock restrictors, and weather proofing. Working in a school environment presented unique challenges, with all installation work restricted to non-term times. This necessitated breaking the project into carefully planned batches, with separate

production ordering and delivery timetables coordinated with installation periods.

Health & Safety Compliance

Full adherence to CDM regulations and HSE requirements Comprehensive method statements and risk assessments

SSSTS and DBS certified supervisor with first aid and asbestos awareness training All staff CSCS registered with appropriate

skills cards

Installation Strategy

Phased scaffold erection and removal timed with half-term breaks Installation segmented by building elevation sections

Top-down approach ensuring safe sequencing Major works during Christmas, October, February and Easter breaks

Preparation and remedial works during weekends and after school hours

The project was carefully designed to maintain the architectural character of the conservation area while significantly improving energy efficiency, sound insulation, and security for the school environment.

Each installation phase concluded with a full deep clean and structured handover to ensure the school could resume normal operations immediately after each break. Suspected asbestos removal was carefully managed as part of the works, though none was ultimately identified.

Outcomes & Conclusion

Safe Execution

Project completed with zero safety incidents despite complex working

conditions and tight timeframes.

On-Time Delivery

All installation phases completed within allocated half-term windows, preventing any disruption to school operations.

Quality Installation

High-performance Accoya timber windows and doors installed to the

highest standard, improving both aesthetics and energy efficiency.

The project demonstrates TF Energy's ability to deliver complex installations in sensitive environments with strict scheduling constraints. Through careful phasing, strict asbestos management protocols, and efficient scaffold logistics, the team ensured a controlled installation programme that maintained a safe environment for staff and pupils throughout.

Brookfield Primary School now benefits from high-performance windows and doors that comply with conservation requirements while significantly improving the building's energy efficiency, comfort, and security.
